First English Evangelical Lutheran Church exists to share God's love, God's spirit, and Christ's resurrection. Through Word, sacrament, and prayer we are empowered to share God's love. First English Lutheran church is a team of believers who have a purpose. We are committed to each other; we are committed to God, and we are committed to sharing the great Good News of love in Jesus Christ with any who will hear. We believe that each person has value in God's eyes, and God has given to each person gifts that can build up this community of purpose. Worship is central to our life of purpose. We offer two worship services each week. The early worship service has something of an informal feel, with monthly chancel drama and more variety in the format. The later service has the rich dignity of the historical worship, enriched by beautful music. Through service to our community, care for the needy, healing the hurts of our neighbors and nurturing our hopes in Christ, we seek to make a difference in the name of Jesus. Through exploring the excitement and power of the Bible, we seek to grow in our knowledge of Jesus Christ. Years ago, there was only one Lutheran Church in the City of Baltimore, and that church spoke only German. A group of people were inspired to ask whether the message of Christ could be spoken in the language of the culture, so that English-speaking friends and children of neighborhood families could hear about Jesus in language they could understand. Their efforts grew into the establishment of the first English-speaking congregation in our city. More than 175 years later, First English Lutheran Church seeks to find ways to bring the message of Jesus in languages people can understand.
